Dr Gene Sherman
Dr Gene Sherman AM has been chair of the Voiceless Council since its inception in 2009.
Gene is Chairman and Executive Director of Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation, a philanthropic organisation dedicated to the public exhibition of significant contemporary art from Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East. She assumed this role following 21 years as Director and Proprietor of Sherman Galleries in Paddington, NSW.
Gene has a specialised knowledge of art, literary theory and French and English literature having spent seventeen years teaching, researching and lecturing at both secondary and tertiary levels.
Gene is an Adjunct Professor at the College of Fine Arts, Deputy Chair of the National Portrait Gallery Board and a member of the Advisory Board of Art & Australia Magazine. She has also held seats on the Boards of the Bundanon Trust (1995–2002) and the Powerhouse Museum (1994–2001) and was Deputy Chair of the Power Institute Council at The University of Sydney (1996–2006).
In 2003, Gene was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government and received a Doctorate of Letters honoris causa by The University of Sydney in 2008. She was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia in 2010 for her cultural philanthropy and her support of emerging and established artists.
