I consider myself a compassionate member of society. I understand that our actions impact on all living beings and wonder why we resort to such cruelty when there are so many man-made materials that we can use?
Akira Isogawa is one of Australia's most celebrated and successful contemporary fashion designers and has been a member of the Voiceless Council since 2011.
Born in Kyoto, Japan, Akira completed his studies in fashion design in the 1990s at the Sydney Institute of Technology and has since become sought after in every major fashion capital of the world. Akira opened his first boutique in Woollahra in 1993 and has shown collections in Paris each year since 1998 and at Australian Fashion Week since 1996. In 1997 Naomi Campbell was pictured on the front cover of Vogue Magazine wearing a dress designed by Akira.
He has been the subject of a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria, exhibited at Object Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney. Akira’s designs have also been represented on stage in four productions by the Sydney Dance Company and in 2005 his contribution to fashion and the arts was recognised by Australia Post with a commemorative postage stamp featuring a series of Australian Legends.
Akira has a passion for animals and incorporates his beliefs into his design philosophy, believing for example, that there is no need to resort to the cruelty of using fur when we can use man-made fabrics. He is an active supporter of Voiceless, having played a prominent role in the 2011 Voices of Art event.
